Business Broadband
How to Choose Business Broadband
Internet has become the most basic element of every business. Broadband internet is the backbone of business operations. While there are numerous service providers and many types of broadband services available, you should select a package which fits your business needs.
Choosing an appropriate broadband service is vital for your business. Selection of the broadband should be as per the business requirements; small & medium business , large business and home based business all have their own unique internet requirements and one size does not fits all.
Its important to select a broadband which is not only value for money but is also reliable. Sometimes the cheapest broadband offering is not the best in terms of network infrastructure, dependability and customer service.
A business broadband should be up and running 24*7, downtime is not an option for a business broadband. Also the provider needs to provide quick and excellent customer service in case of any problems.
While choosing a business broadband you should keep following things in mind:
Speed: Speed is the essence of any internet service; a slow internet connection not only reduces productivity, but also causes irritation and frustration to users. While many service providers claim of providing high speed internet, the actual speed is not as high as mentioned in their brochure; it’s always a good idea to test the actual speed before selecting a broadband connection. A speed test can be carried out at any of the websites providing ‘free’ speed tests.
A business broadband should have at least 2Mbps speed. Though 2Mbps would be sufficient for most of the small and medium businesses, there are options available for 8Mbps, 16Mbps and 24 Mbps connections.
Contention Ratio: Contention ratio is the ratio of actual demand (no of users using broadband simultaneously) to the actual bandwidth. If contention ratio is high, that means that the bandwidth offered per user is low, which effectively means a slow internet connection for you. You should always select a broadband which has a comparatively lower contention ratio.
Security: Security is the most important aspect of a network. Using an internet means that your systems are open to outside world and potential virus threats. Select a broadband that offers spyware protection and anti virus services. Some providers also offers online backup and firewalls but these additional features may shoot up the cost.
Customer Service: Before selecting a broadband check the customer service record of the provider, the provider should provide dedicated round the clock assistance to resolve any issues.
Networking: Your business will need broadband for multiple systems. Select a broadband which comes with an option of connecting more that one system. Ensure that the connection supports as many systems as required and a little more as the number of systems may increase in the future.
Static IP Address: A static IP address allows you to access the system remotely. Every broadband connection does not come with a Static IP address, Go for static IP address only if you need to access the system remotely (as it will increase the overall cost), otherwise there is no need of Static IP address.
While selecting a broadband, most businesses will go for the lowest priced option. Lower price should be one of the criteria, but it should not be the primary criteria for selecting a business broadband. While choosing a business broadband you need to consider all the above points in order to have a fast, reliable and secure business broadband experience.
